The Kama Sutra of Vatsyayana was intended as a lesson in proper decorum and relationships between Hindu couples of Vatsyayana's time. Just as their modern counterparts, ancient couples sought after a deeper level of intimacy with each other and a feeling of closeness.

Vatsyayana penned the Kama Sutra in hopes of helping his peers to achieve the goals of life, including the goal of Sutra, and to put these goals in proper prospective. One of the recommended forms in the Kama Sutra was the positions of Embracing as they provided for a special closeness.

Why Is Embracing Important?

It is quite amazing how much feeling can be communicated by an embrace or hug. As children, we are comforted in times of pain or sickness by a mothers loving arms. As we grow older, we still seek out that close bond with others as way to feel loved and appreciated. With an embrace, we can express condolence, affection, protection or comfort.

In the Kama Sutra, Vatsyayana recognized the importance that an embrace could hold in a relationship between lovers. He realized that the simple act of embracing could convey the deep emotions and security that the mates provided for each other and a feeling of connecting of their souls. With these thoughts in mind, he recommended the Embracing positions of the Kama Sutra.

What Are The Embracing Positions Of The Kama Sutra?

Vatsyayana related a variety of embracing positions in the Kama Sutra with two varieties for standing embrace being the The Twining of the Creeper which the Kama Sutra describes as, "When a woman, clinging to a man as a creeper twines round a tree, bends his head down to hers with the desire of kissing him and slightly makes the sound of sut sut, embraces him, and looks lovingly towards him." and the Climbing of a Tree which the Vatsyayana explained as being,

"When a woman, having placed one of her feet on the foot of her lover, and the other on one of his thighs, passes one of her arms round his back, and the other on his shoulders, makes slightly the sounds of singing and cooing, and wishes, as it were, to climb up him in order to have a kiss."

The Kama Sutra goes on to relate several embracing positions to be applied at the time of sexual union. These were known as The Mixture of Sesamum Seed with Rice and The Mixture of Milk and Water. Both of these positions were intended to induce closeness and a sense of melting two bodies into one.

Vatsyayana's Kama Sutra went on to describe four lesser embraces as well that involved more specific areas of the body rather than the complete embraces mentioned above. These four embraces are conveyed to us as The Embrace of the Thighs, The Embrace of the Jaghana (or. the part of the body from the navel downwards to the thighs), The Embrace of the Breasts and The Embrace of the Forehead.
